Fresh Faces: Duskin
We caught up with Duskin’s Stephanie Tran before her big unveil
Let’s talk inspiration.
I never really start off with one full idea. I collect all these blog pictures and magazine tears throughout the seasons and put them up on this inspiration board of mine and I move things around, look at silhouettes I like. In the end my really obnoxious working title for this collection is Victorian Prep Tea Party.
Previously I used a lot of silks in my collections. Wearing them this past summer, I realized not everything was practical. I wanted to do something with more ease. I’m obsessed with the Victorian era and all of their cottons so that’s what I went to—a tea party with lots of cottons and eyelits; just simple. It’s funny because in the lookbook I just shot it turns out to look more 60s. But it’s nice, it works together.
Is there a certain girl who embodies this collection?
I have style icons who I love but in terms of the girl who wears my clothes—it’s someone like me. I’m into fashion and I keep up with the trends but I don’t dress by trends. I don’t dress season to season. It’s hard for me to design for spring or winter because that’s not how I dress. I might wear a summer dress in the winter with tights.
Do you show anyone the collection before unveiling it to the public?
I hide it away. I have friends who give me really great feedback and advice but in the end this is my collection—it’s me. It’s better for me to keep it under wraps because then it’s fully me. And I’m responsible for all the mistakes!
Three things you can’t live without?
Coffee, a pair of Reebok Classics that I’ve had for 13 years (I run from Brooklyn to the Garment District in them), and the tux blazer from my last collection.
